SLEEP
DEPRIVATION IMPEDES PRODUCTIVITY
Sleep
is a basic necessity of life. The current 24-hour society, we use precious
nighttime hours for daytime activities. We need to sleep about eight hours a
day, we cannot force our eyes work all the time because Sleep is very important
to keep our stamina for our daytime activities. We will always ready to start
every activity in our daily life when we have enough sleep. It also can perform
our mind in our productivity. We can study or work comfortably when we are in
the fresh condition of our mind in the other word; the condition of our brain
in maximum performances. Some of people prefer to sleep early that gives more readiness
in working or studying even though in fact, many of people use their nighttime
for work overtime or do useless activity such as playing game; they use their nighttime
for playing game online in an internet cafe that can make our activities in the
next day disturbed. That is why sleep deprivation impedes our productivity.
One
of the effects of sleep deprivation is fatigue. People usually do not realize
that stamina is important. They assume that it is usual. It is true that people
still imagine when we work overtime; we used to think that we are more
productive. For over a hundred years or more, this has been deemed nonsense. The
first productivity studies were conducted by Ernst Abbe at the Zeiss lens
laboratories in the 1880s. They indicated that productivity study has shown, up
to around 40 hours a week, we are more productive but after that, we become
less productivity, cost-effective work because when we get tired, we make
mistakes and the extra hours we put in are enjoyed by correcting our errors.
This is demonstrably true in industries like software coding, in which mistakes
can cost a lot of time to put right but it is equally true in manufacturing
where more units of production also mean more flaws and waste. Even though the
data around productivity has proved remorseless, humans have found the message
hard to accept. It seems so logical that two units of work will produce twice
the output. It is logical but it is wrong. The critical measure of work is not
should be input but output. It is not about how many hours you work, but the
quality and quantity of work they produce. The reason sleep is so important because
fatigue is not simple. When we are tired, our performance does not decrease
directly. Instead, when we lose a night's sleep, some parts of our brain become
less active. It has function to unite information from the senses and it is
influenced in our knowledge of numbers and manipulation of objects. The other
part of our brain involve in our visual processing. So the parts of our mind
responsible for understanding the world and the data around us start to slow
down. Some parts of your brain responsible for keeping you awake. In
evolutionary terms, this makes sense. In
the other study has found that after
24 hours of sleep deprivation, there is a reduction of six percent in glucose
reaching the brain. That is why we crave donuts and candy but the loss is not
shared equally; some parts of our brain lose 12 percent to 14 percent of their
glucose. And those are the areas we most need for thinking: for distinguishing
between ideas, for social control, and to be able to tell the difference
between good and bad.
A
part of effects, sleep deprivation also causes physical effects. One is a
resultt of sleep deprivation have influence on obesity. In 2004 USA Today told
of scientific research that had found that not getting enough sleep could
actually lead to weight gain and contribute to obesity. Numerous studies have
shown that when an individual does not get enough sleep he will have higher
than normal levels of the hormone Gherlin. This hormone stimulates the appetite
and makes an individual feel hungry. Individuals who are sleep deprived may
also have low levels of the hormone leptin. This hormone allows an individual
to feel satisfied and without it she will feel hungry. Combining an increased
appetite with a decreased feeling of fullness leads to overeating, which in
turn leads to obesity. New studies on the cost of obesity are fueling action
against the obesity epidemic. The cost
of the obesity epidemic leads to a number of recognized health problems for individuals.
Employers, in particular, are directly affected by the crisis because obesity
is dramatically raising the cost of health care, decreasing employees’
productivity while at work, and causing increases in absenteeism.
Sleep
deprivation has a general impairing effect on the physical and mental fatigue, Although
it is not always easy to get a full eight hours of sleep every night,
individuals who are experiencing far less than this and experiencing physical
and mental fatigue during the day should consult a doctor. A physician will be
able to identify why problems wih sleep are occuring and let sleep deprived
patient's know what treatment options are available to them. Getting enough
sleep at night is essential to the functioning of a human being and not getting
enough sleep has the potential of leading to a myriad of physical and psychological
problems. So, we will easier to increase our productivity when we have enough
sleep at night.
